Members of ASBOA are management oriented and serve in the Corporate, Financial and Business Services areas in the K-12 public education system of Alberta and North West Territories.
Membership in the Association is held by the individual and is on a voluntary basis.
A board shall appoint a Secretary and a Treasurer or one person to act as the Secretary Treasurer. (Part 4 , Division 2, Section 68 of the Education Act). The title of Secretary Treasurer is the most commonly recognized title for the position, but others may include:
- Associate Superintendent of Financial and Business Operations,
- Chief Financial Officer
- Corporate Secretary
- Corporate Treasurer
The membership year is from September 1st through August 31st of each year.
ASBOA Bylaw 2 - Membership and Certification sets the membership categories and eligibility. Membership in the Association is voluntary and the membership is held by the individual and is not transferable.
Regular Member

- access to ASBO International Global School Business Network
- access to all programs and services provided by the Association
Eligibility:
- employed by a school jurisdiction as a senior school business official with responsibility in matters related to the management of the jurisdictions' financial and/or business operations; and,
- abides by the Association Code of Ethics
- pays the membership fee
Examples:
- Secretary Treasurer (aka Associate Superintendent of Business and/or Finance; CFO, etc)
- Assistant Secretary Treasurer, Corporate Secretary; Treasurer;
- Director of (Financial and/or Business Services; Human Resources; Technology; Facilities; Transportation; Communications;
- Manager Level Positions - financial and/or business operations
Associate Member
- held by the individual
- not transferable
- NON - voting rights
- access to a variety of programs and services provided by the Association
Eligibility:
- employed by a school jurisdiction in a support role in the financial and business operations;
- abides by the Association Code of Ethics
- pay the membership fee
Examples:
- Supervisory Level Positions - financial and/or business operations
- Accountants, Payroll, Purchasing agents; school business managers;
Affiliate Member
- held by the individual
- NON-voting rights
- abides by the Association Code of Ethics
- pay the membership fee
Eligibility:
- a faculty member of a post-secondary institution in a program of studies related to the areas of practice for school business officials; or
- an employee of a private school in a senior leadership role, supporting the school's financial and business administrative functions
- is employed or contracted by the provincial or territorial government in support of school jurisdictions
Student Member
- held by the individual
- NON-voting rights
- abides by the Association Code of Ethics
- pay the membership fee
Eligibility:
- individuals currently employed in a school jurisdiction are not eligible for student membership
- currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution in Alberta or the Northwest Territories in a program of studies related to the areas of practice for school business officials; or
- currently enrolled in a program of studies working towards your designation as a Chartered Professional Accountant
