Eligibility and Application Process - Stream 2: Equivalency to Another Profession (s.8(1)(b))
“if the applicant is registered in good standing with a profession in another jurisdiction that is recognized by the Executive as having substantively equivalent competence and practice requirements”
An applicant will need to submit a letter to the ASBOA Executive to request consideration of Professional Equivalency prior to the application for CSBO being submitted.
Documents required for assessment
- Eligibility requirements for the equivalent profession, including the education requirements and practice requirements
- Employment history supporting the requirement under Section 8(1) (iv) of the SBO Regulations
- Areas of Practice Self-Assessment (knowledge in a minimum of 3 areas of practice and 8 or more skills set is required)
If approved, a copy of the letter from the Executive must be included with the application package and all other requirements must be met as identified on the application form for s.8.1(b)
Applicants should be aware of the requirements under Stream 1 (s8 (1) (a) and (v) of the SBO Regulations in understanding the substantively equivalent competence and practice requirements.
The Executive will review the request for consideration within 60 days of receipt and will provide a written response indicating if the equivalent competence and practice requirements are met.
Application Information required
- must be a REGULAR MEMBER in ASBOA;
- must have been a regulated member of the equivalent profession for at least one (1) year

A copy of the approval letter from the ASBOA Executive on Equivalency.
The online application form in the member area will self populate with the membership information; Status; Member Category; School Authority; Year joined.
Additional Information required as part of the application for CSBO under Section 8(1)(b).
Good Character and Reputation Requirements (Section 8(1)(a)(ii)
Provide two letters of reference:
- one from your employer during the time you were registered with the equivalent profession confirming that you are of good character and reputation, or one from a regulated member in the equivalent profession, and
- letter of reference from the previous (current) professional organization that you were/are a member in good standing and do not have any current investigations on-going
Background Declaration:
An applicant will also be asked to respond to the following questions in support that the applicant is of good character and reputation on the online application form.
While registered as a member of any professional regulatory organization have you:
- Ever had a finding of unprofessional conduct or similar disciplinary finding made against you? YES/NO
- Have you ever entered into an agreement with the professional organization regarding your conduct? YES/NO
- Any outstanding or ongoing complaints or discipline matters? YES/NO
- Ever been involuntarily removed from the register of a professional regulatory organization? YES/NO
At any time, have you ever been investigated or charged for a criminal offense and/or for acts committed against a minor? YES/NO
Please note that if you answered yes to any of the questions above, the Registration committee will follow up with the applicant for additional details and/or documents.

I authorize the Registration Committee to obtain such information concerning my education, training, experience and membership status as may be required to determine my eligibility for certification in ASBOA. I understand that the Registration committee may request additional information from me.
Application Fee
There is an application fee of $150.00 + GST The application fee is payable on submission of the completed application.

The online application form can be located on the individual member dashboard. Please ensure that all of your supporting documentation is in a pdf format for ease of uploading during the application process. Incomplete applications or a failure to pay the application fee may result in the form being returned to the applicant for follow up and may delay a timely decision by the Registration committee.
