HOW DO I REGISTER IN THE CSBO PROGRAM?

 
  • The Certified School Business Official designation is not a PROGRAM, but rather a RECOGNITION of an established standard of education,  experience and practice common to school business.
     
  • You must meet the minimum education and experience requirements in addition to other professional requirements to apply for a Certified School Business Official designation.
 

WHAT ARE THE EXPERIENCE and PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS?

  • You must be a REGULAR MEMBER in ASBOA in good standing for at least 1 year prior to submitting your application
  • The regulations state that you must have a minimum of 3 years experience in the practice of School Administration in Canada.
  • We require that you show that in your current position,  you are responsible for at least 3 "Areas of Practice"  (ie: Administration, Financial Resources, HR Resources) and that you have responsibility for a minimum of 8 work related functions as identified in the ASBOA Practice Standards  (ie: Public Policy; Technology; Human Relations; Community Engagement; Purchasing; Records Mgmt)

WHAT ARE THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS?


You must have at least  ONE of the following:
  • A business degree or diploma from an accredited institution
  • A professional  Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) or be eligible to write the exams or currently enrolled in the program
  • Certificate in Local Government Studies from the University of Alberta (prior to 2004) 
OR an individual has
 
  • Completed a program of studies that is assessed as substantively equivalent to the above items (1, 2 or 3)
All applicants are required to complete a School Law and School Administration course that is recognized by the Executive as identified in the School Business Officials Regulation 8(1) (v)
 
  • the Introduction to Education Law offered by ASBOA as meeting the regulation requirement and meets the 24 hours of instruction and study.
  • The Executive recognizes the successful completion and awarding of the Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations (SFO) certification as meeting the regulation requirement for School Administration   
  • The  Executive recognizes a School Law or School Administration program offered by an accredited institution that has been assessed and measured against the Practice Standards and meets the recommended guidelines.  (Use the checklist provided as part of the certification resources)
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • You must be a Regular member in good standing with ASBOA  
  • You must be of good character and reputation (moral, ethical and is looked upon favourably within the school business community)
  • You must be actively involved in the Association at the provincial and/or the local level 
 
We believe that all Regular members of ASBOA should obtain their Certified School Business Official designation within 3-5 years of becoming a member. 
 
We also believe that as members advance through their career that they should work towards achieving their Certified School Business Official designation.
