Who we are

Founded in 1939, the Association of School Business Officials of Alberta (ASBOA) is a self-regulating professional association that supports more than 200 members from across Alberta and the Northwest Territories to achieve excellence in school business management.

At ASBOA we enable our members to become leaders in school business management by connecting them to the tools, knowledge and professional expertise and guidance needed to succeed.

Our Profession

The role of the school business official varies by jurisdiction size and available resources, however the essential skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage and safeguard district assets and maximize resources for students do not.

Through Professional legislation, the Alberta Government delegates self-governing responsibilities to the professional association to safeguard the Alberta public interest.  To ensure that the public interest is served, the government appoints a public member to the association.

This legislation gives our Association the authority to ensure that our members:

  • meet educational and experience requirements

  • provide safe, ethical and competent services

  • follow prescribed codes of conduct

  • have appropriate complaint, investigative and disciplinary processes

Our Members

The requirement for school jurisdictions to appoint a Secretary Treasurer exists in the Education Act (Part 4, Div. 2 Section 68).

The Secretary Treasurer is also known as the CFO or Associate Superintendent of Financial and Business Operations.

The business side of education is multi-faceted and complex.  It is about ensuring that the resources available are used to provide the best education system possible and to support the success of students in the K-12 sector.

Dedicated Individuals work in a management or support position and may be responsible for one area or many.
