Accounting Supervisor (1.0 FTE)

Parkland School Division No. 70 has a regular full time (1.0 FTE) Accounting Supervisor position available at Centre for Education in Stony Plain, AB.  The successful candidate is responsible for providing leadership to the Payroll and Accounting team within the Financial Services team, the development of timely and accurate financial reports, budget preparation, and maintenance of appropriate financial procedures and internal controls.
 
Function and Purpose of Position
• Analytical review of the reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis, including the reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger
• Monthly variance analysis from budget
• Preparation of quarterly financial statements, forecasts and analysis
• Coordinate and oversee the preparation of year-end audit working papers including assets, liabilities, revenues and expenditures
• Preparation of year-end comparative financial statements and supporting schedules
• Assistance with the preparation of the annual report
• Work closely with the external audit team ensuring all necessary critical information is available to them
• Oversee and perform internal audits on schools
• Preparation of monthly financial statements and distribution of accurate and reliable financial reports
• Oversee the accounts receivable, cash receipts and accounts payable functions providing assistance to Directors and other team members in the review of operations and any other ad-hoc reports and requests
• Monitoring cash requirements
• Maintenance of manuals documenting accounting procedures and policies including; data base, & other financial processes
• Coach accounting team members, including review and approval of work assignments and training requirements of the team including completion of regular performance review
• Provide training and assistance to school administrators and secretaries with budgets, internal controls, and financial management of their sites
• Other duties as requested by the Director of Financial Services
• Oversee the development and facilitation of the preparation of school, departments and Division budgets
• Collection and analysis of historical data to be used in the budget process
• Preparation of working papers for capital and operational projections and budgets
• Assistance in the preparation of the budget presentation to the Board
• Prepare financial statements, reports and records through collecting, analyzing and summarizing account information
• Maintain financial security by researching and reconciling discrepancies; auditing and verifying documents; following internal controls; 
• Accomplish tasks on time and contribute to the team by taking on special projects as needed
• Monitor reserve accounts and investments, and review bank statements
• Stay current with all regulations, practices, tax laws, reporting requirements and trends

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
a)         Education:
i)          Undergraduate degree in management, commerce or equivalent experience
ii)          A professional accounting designation (CPA)
iii)         Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and First Aid certificate would be an asset

b)         Experience:
i)          Minimum 5 years working experience in accounting required
ii)          Knowledge of accepted accounting rules, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements
iii)         Computer literate, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and e-mail 
iv)         High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
v)         Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures
vi)         Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines
vii)        Ability to adapt to and learn new software

As an Accounting Supervisor you are required to make good decisions to solve problems and support the payroll and accounting team members.  It is essential to have great time management and organization skills to set competing priorities to meet time deadlines in a timely manner.

• Inherent risk of work: 

There are inherent risks in the work employees do throughout Parkland School Division No. 70 (PSD70). All staff are to be prepared to satisfactorily manage the inherent risks encountered in their work.  PSD70 makes staff aware of known risks before assignments are assigned, and PSD70 provides any necessary training to be successful in alleviating any potential risk.  Staff are responsible for advising their Superiors (Principal/Director/Manager/Supervisor) of unknown risks encountered relating directly to their work.
Staff may be injured by a student as student behaviour can be somewhat unpredictable at times. The specific needs of students are not always known and the student may become aggressive, which has the potential for causing injury to others.  For a student with an Individual Program Plan (IPP), staff should also advise the teacher assigned to oversee the IPP of unknown risks encountered.  Any plans for working with students who may show aggression whether an IPP or other plan, are evolving plans which may change over time to meet the needs of a particular student at a PSD70 school.
Staff are expected to cooperate in ensuring workplace health and safety in a caring and respectful educational setting.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is a 12-month out of scope position, part of the Non Union Group (NUG) of employees.
 
This position requires a current clean criminal record check and child intervention record check.
 
Hours of Work:  37.5 hours/week (Monday to Friday)
Pay Rate: $82,623.12 - $101,332.73 annual
